The study conducted by Chandrasekhar et al. is a single center, prospective, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a high-concentration full-spectrum extract of Ashwagandha roots in reducing stress and anxiety and in improving the general well-being of those experiencing stress. 64 subjects (41 men, 23 women, 18-54 y) experiencing chronic stress were randomized to receive placebo or 300mg of Ashwagandha root extract twice a day for a period of 60 days. During the supplementation period (on Day 15, Day 30 and Day 45), a follow-up telephone call was made to all subjects to check for treatment compliance and to note any adverse reactions. Supplementation effects were assessed using measurements of serum cortisol and assessing participant scores on standard stress-assessment questionnaires. The score on each scale item measures the frequency or extent to which a certain stress-signaling event occurs. Results indicate Ashwagandha supplementation exhibited a significant reduction (P<0.0001) in scores on all stress-assessment scales on day 60 when compared to placebo. Furthermore, the cortisol levels were also reduced (P=0.0006) with supplementation when compared to placebo. The results of this study indicate that Ashwagandha supplementation may help reduce the effects of stress and also help support mood balance and as a result relaxation.
